Apila and Sunnuntai in 1970. Birger Kaipiainen was Finland's foremost ceramic artist of the midcentury period, whose unique style gave him world renown. His unique works are acclaimed collector's pieces and his tableware designs from the 1960s are still in production. Birger Kaipiainen enrolled in art school to study scenography in 1933 but eventually graduated as ceramicist and decorative artist in 1937. After graduation he was invited to join the Arabia art department. Except for a few years spent abroad, Kaipiainen worked for Arabia all his life.
